Android and Microsoft smartphones, on the rise among Western European Government employees

smartphoneA recent survey by research company International Data Corporation (IDC) reveals that over 75% of Western European government respondents are using vendors other than Apple or BlackBerry.

The use of BlackBerry is on the wane in the government sector, according to the survey, with only 27% of respondents currently using or planning to use the device to access enterprise applications.

In terms of investment focus areas by governments, over 60% of European government sector respondents will be investing in at least one form of mobile software over the next two years.

Central governments are channeling investments into financial applications, while procurement is an area of increased focus for local governments. Higher-than-average adoption of these mobility applications reflects a history of senior managers not working in a fixed location but still requiring access to tools to aid decision making and approve expenditure.

“Mobilization of email applications is mature,” said Massimiliano Claps, research director, IDC EMEA Government Insights. “Government CIOs will have to support new waves of investments that include field service industry-specific applications, back-office applications, workflow automation, and BI/analytics.”
